Reading a taxonomy of personality facets

Narrow personality labels can overlap, divide, or rename similar content. A useful taxonomy requires attention to item meaning and relationships, not just an appealing list of facet names.

THE READING QUESTION

Narrow personality labels can overlap, divide, or rename similar content. A useful taxonomy requires attention to item meaning and relationships, not just an appealing list of facet names.

Locate the mapping problem

Irwing and colleagues address the organization of personality facets. The source is relevant when different inventories use overlapping labels or place similar content under different headings. Read it as an attempt to clarify a mapping problem. A taxonomy is not a license to create many named scores and assume that each represents a distinct, well-supported characteristic.

A fictional crowded dashboard

A fictional coaching application displays scores for diligence, orderliness, persistence, reliability, discipline, and follow-through. A participant asks how these six qualities differ. The developer answers with nearly identical examples about completing work on time. The dashboard may look detailed while repeatedly summarizing the same information. Another participant carefully organizes materials but frequently abandons projects when priorities change. That case suggests at least one potentially useful distinction, but the distinction needs clear definitions and questions. More score labels can increase apparent precision without increasing what the report actually tells the reader.

Audit the content before counting scales

For this exercise, place each proposed facet in a row and list its defining behavior, a nearby behavior it excludes, and an example that would distinguish the two. If no distinguishing example can be written, reconsider whether separate scores are justified. Then examine whether items differ in content or merely in synonyms. A statement about keeping materials orderly differs from one about continuing after a setback. Two statements about being dependable may not. The exercise should also consider context: stopping an obsolete project can be a sensible decision rather than low persistence. Definitions need enough specificity to avoid rewarding a behavior regardless of circumstances.

Questions for the taxonomy paper

Ask what material was used to construct the proposed organization and how the authors compared competing facet arrangements. Were labels matched by expert judgment, item content, response patterns, or several kinds of information? What happens to facets that partly overlap more than one broad domain? For the fictional application, identify the cost of merging two scales and the cost of keeping them separate. Would the resulting report change a practical conversation? These questions focus attention on explanatory usefulness and evidence rather than the number of categories a product can display.

A restrained reporting choice

Machiavelli Personality Facets presents six original proposed facets. It does not claim to reproduce a complete taxonomy or an established sixteen-factor instrument. The fictional dashboard audit illustrates work that remains necessary for our own questions: checking content coverage, overlap, and whether separate interpretations are justified. Participants can use the current form for voluntary reflection without treating every named score as a precise psychological partition.
