THE CENTRAL IDEA
MLF needs independent research on response meaning, domain structure, context, fairness, and practical consequences.
Research context
Leadership measurement and construct-development reviews support careful specification of an intended target.
Machiavelli development analysis
The first research question is whether adults recognize the intended practices. Cognitive interviews should ask participants from different leadership settings to explain the items, describe an example, and identify assumptions about authority or opportunity. Content reviewers should assess whether the six domains cover a coherent area without borrowing the architecture of a proprietary instrument. Their actual qualifications, role, and disagreements should be documented. A review process is stronger when it records what changed and what remains uncertain rather than displaying an expert title as decoration.
Next, a pilot should evaluate distributions, missingness, wording effects, and alternative structures. Sample size should be justified by the analyses and the precision required, not by a universal rule of thumb. Exploratory work and confirmatory work should use separate data where feasible. The preferred model should be compared with simpler explanations, including a general favorable-response factor. If domain distinctions do not add useful interpretation, the framework should be revised. A six-panel report is not a scientific reason to retain six scales.
Stability and context deserve their own studies. Repeated measurement should record changes in role, workload, team composition, and opportunity to use a practice. Short event diaries could help test whether the questionnaire reflects recurring behavior or a recent salient incident. Researchers should distinguish between-person differences from within-person change and should report uncertainty. A development tool may reasonably target changeable practices, but it still needs enough precision to avoid presenting noise as a meaningful shift in leadership.
External evidence should include specific outcomes and more than one perspective. Proposed examples include clarity of delegation agreements, understanding of decision rationales, or access to timely clarification. Observers must have relevant opportunity and give informed consent. The study should avoid employment consequences and should not use the framework to make promotion or dismissal decisions. Comparisons with established measures can test overlap and incremental usefulness, but only with appropriate permission and a clear explanation that correlation does not establish equivalence.
Finally, evaluate the report itself. Does it help participants choose a proportionate action? Can they explain its limits? Does it increase self-blame, encourage fixed labels, or obscure a structural problem? Compare it with a simpler reflective worksheet and publish null or adverse findings. Independent replication should precede broader claims, and every claim should identify the version and use studied. Until these stages provide adequate evidence, MLF remains an original development framework for voluntary adult reflection, with no validated norms, predictive accuracy, or consequential employment use.
Preregistration should identify the primary interpretations under examination and the alternatives that would lead to revision. This protects against presenting whichever pattern looks favorable after analysis as though it had been the original scientific prediction.
The public study record should distinguish content review, participant interviews, statistical analysis, and independent replication. These are different activities with different evidential roles. Completing one does not imply completion of the others, and an expert’s participation in a small wording review should not be presented as certification of the whole instrument.
Points to carry forward
