MPF / CHAPTER 10 OF 10 / 3 MIN READ

A research roadmap for an original facet model

MPF needs evidence that its selected facets are coherent, distinguishable, interpretable, and useful for voluntary reflection.

THE CENTRAL IDEA

MPF needs evidence that its selected facets are coherent, distinguishable, interpretable, and useful for voluntary reflection.

The substantive question

The first development decision is whether these six facets deserve to be grouped in one reflection instrument. Their selection reflects practical interest, not a claim of comprehensive personality coverage. A research programme should therefore evaluate both each facet and the rationale for the collection. It should be willing to remove, rename, split, or narrow a facet when evidence requires it.

Expert review can map item content and identify overlap. Participant interviews can reveal unintended meanings, especially around reserve and pressure. Pilot analyses should compare the proposed structure with alternatives and inspect whether situation or wording dominates the patterns. Independent studies should then estimate stability and examine selected external criteria. Report research should evaluate comprehension and whether users mistake the six facets for a complete personality account. A technical manual must make clear that MPF is not an authorized form, derivative score system, or substitute manual for the 16PF. Historical discussion should remain separate from claims about the current product.

A worked interpretation

A preregistered hypothesis might predict that warmth and reserve remain distinguishable even if their scores correlate. If responses instead suggest that the items mainly reflect comfort with a particular social setting, the team should investigate that interpretation. The outcome may be a narrower situational tool rather than a general personality facet measure.

Such revision would represent scientific progress because the claim becomes better matched to the evidence. The research record should retain the original prediction, the result, and the revised definition. Until this process is completed, the current six-facet profile is a transparent development proposal for adult self-reflection.

A question worth testing

The research programme should evaluate whether the six-facet collection is coherent as a product purpose even if the facets are statistically distinct. Users may need only a subset for a chosen reflection question. A future modular design would require new evidence about administration and interpretation rather than assume that removing items has no effect. Development should follow the use case, with versioned claims and an explicit account of tradeoffs.

How we would evaluate MPF

MPF's roadmap should prioritize a content decision that often gets hidden: which facets belong in a selective form and which do not. Reviewers would assess whether the six current areas serve the stated reflection purpose, whether important distinctions within them are omitted, and whether adding another scale would improve interpretation enough to justify extra questions. The number six is a design starting point. It is not an empirical discovery that must be preserved throughout development.

The next stages would examine comprehension, context coverage, competing structures, and facet-specific consistency. External studies would test narrowly defined observations rather than a single general outcome such as effectiveness. A report study would then check whether readers preserve combinations such as warmth with reserve and order with flexibility. All stages should retain a record of rejected items and interpretations so later revisions can be understood. The technical account should state plainly that discussing 16PF history does not provide access to its item content, scoring, norms, or evidence base. MPF's eventual contribution, if supported, would be its own limited set of distinctions and usable explanations. Until those studies exist, comprehensive coverage and validated precision remain outside its claims.

Points to carry forward

  • A smaller justified model is better than an elaborate unsupported one.
  • Published findings concern the cited constructs and instruments; they do not establish properties of this development form.

Where the evidence stops
